Bill's Photography

William MacKay

It is the time of year that many think of new years resolutions, personal and business goals for the coming year. I thought I should collect my thoughts and apply that process to my photography so here are my thoughts for 2012.

I am going to focus more on what I want to photograph in this article rather than the business aspects of photography, but I thought I would share a link to a 2012 Photography Business Plan Workbook which is available from Photoshelter that looks like an excellent resource. The photography web service they provide also looks interesting.

Reflecting on this year, 2011 has been my most rewarding year to date from a photography perspective. I have enjoyed taking photos of family and travels,…

I had the pleasure of visiting the Wychwood Barns Community Gallery today to view a show put on by my daughter and an associate. In addition to enjoying it from a parent's perspective I was very impressed with the photography and artwork I viewed and it certainly was a motivating experience from a photography perspective. Here are some of the highlights.

The showing was held at Wychwood Barns Community Gallery which I am told is an excellent place to exhibit ones work. It is attached to a market which would have been nice to visit if I just had the time. There should have been lots of photo opportunities there.

Here are the exhibitors and a couple of shots of the gallery. Jennifer Reedie on the left and my daughter Nancy Rose on the right. Visit Flickr for additional photos of the event.

I recently had the pleasure of having my oldest daughter review some of my recent photographs. I found this to be an excellent learning experience, for me not her, and as I look back on it I find myself proud but at the same time humbled by the experience.

Although not my primary profession I do call myself a photographer and I think that is still correct after reviewing the definition of a photographer in wikipedia. I have been trying lately to improve my photographic skills by attending a photography course run by Stefan Chirila, a local photographer, and participating in the Portraits of 100 Strangers project on Flickr as well as some other reading and study. I believe some of my photographs are reasonably good, at least I like them, I know I…

I thought the video shown below is very applicable to the Portraits of 100 strangers project.

Just a quick update on my participation in the portraits of 100 strangers project which I am very much enjoying. It seems that the more photos I take, the more I enjoy it. I have included some highlights of the project below.

This photo provides an overview of everyone I have photographed in the project to date. Every one in the photo is a unique individual I would not have met if I was not working on the project. Every one has a story and even if I only learned a very little of their story in the brief time I spoke with them, I found it interesting.

When I meet any of the people on the street who are in the above photograph I will have a reason to say hello and I will already know a little bit about them and…

I have been working on the 100 strangers project for a few weeks now. It has met and exceeded my expectations in many ways.

It took several months thinking about the 100 strangers project to get started. I guess the biggest roadblock is anticipating prospective subjects refusal to have their pictures taken to participate in the project.  I know that will inevidably happen but having now encountered ten folks who willingly participated and some very enthusiastically, a refusal will not come as such a blow. My thoughts about this project fall into three categories; taking the photo, technical and other observations…

Today was a great day, a perfect day from a weather perspective, work and just about everything else went well and I, at long last got started on my 100 strangers project.

Here is a picture of Olivia, the first participant in my 100 strangers project and a link to my 100 strangers set on Flickr which has more details.

Here are a few lines and a link to 500px a new site for photographers to which I was recently introduced.

500px.com is the web address of an imressive service for photographers that a contact on Google+ recently introduced me to. What also interested me is that it is provided by a Toronto, Ontario company. Here is a link about them.

The first thing that impressed me was the quality of the photographs and the way they are displayed featuring popular, editor's choice, and upcoming photographers. The service provides member profiles, friends, tracks activity, provides a wall on which comments can be…

I just received a Google + invitation I have been hoping to get for some time, not from Google but from a fellow emergency manager in the USA who had an invitation to spare. Emergency management and social media as it relates to emergency and crisis management is my primary reason for wanting Google + but I would also like to use it for photography.

To follow up on my last blog article on Portraits of Strangers I was pleasantly surprised to find a portrait that was taken not far from home, so it was encouraging to find a fellow Canadian participating in the project. Here is a link to the photo.

I am just starting to find my way around Google + and see it has tremendous potential to network publicly and privately within different groups or circles as Google refers to them. From a photography perspective it integrates with Google's Picasa …
