I am working on a presentation for a CAER group entitled "Use of Social Media and On Line Networking to Promote Community Awareness and Emergency Response". I would appreciate your assistance in helping me find examples of where you have seen social networking / social media effectively used by these groups or situations where not using social media use has presented challenges.
The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada, formerly The Canadian Chemical Producers Association, was the founder of the Responsible Care initiative in 1985, a program which is now used by the chemical industry world wide. I was involved with this initiative and TRANSCAER the transportation component of it, while working with Esso Chemical Canada and I believe it is an excellent program. It has been some years since I was directly involved but I welcome the opportunity to contribute again by helping some CAER group members develop a better understanding of social media and on line networking and how it can support their local CAER efforts.
Now to my request for assistance. I have reviewed numerous Responsible Care and CAER group web sites to get a better understanding about how social media is being used by CAER groups today. Some sites provide links to facilitate sharing a specific page on multiple social media sites and one provides a link to wikipdia to help readers understand social networking. I have not so far found examples of where social media is being used between CAER groups and local residents. If you have any examples where this is taking place I would apreciate it if you would send me a web link. I believe this would be an excelent use of social media and am looking for real life examples of where it is working.

I too would be interested in examples of the use of social media between CAER groups and first responders. To-date I have not come across any municipalities that uses these functions in this capacity.
Although this article was published in August I am still looking for good examples of social media and on line networking being used to support Responsible Care / CAER programs. Some discussion with industry is scheduled for the near future and any information you can provide will certainly be helpful.
